Choosing between Shared Hosting and Virtual Private Server (VPS)
Since VPS offers you total control under root or administrator level,
you will have to perform server administration / management tasks yourself.
The control provided by VPS is perfect for developers
or those who require total control and need to have the ability to configure
the server the way they like, and install custom software as needed.
The following table lists some of the differences between using a shared hosting
service and a VPS service.
| Shared Hosting |
VPS Hosting |
Easy to use. Once you've signed up, simply upload your site and
use the control panel. Everything is ready to go for you.
You will need to set up the DNS configurations, the control panel,
and various other systems before being able to upload your site.
The web server and email configurations are fully supported by our technical team,
excluding the code in your web applications.
You will need to be able to troubleshoot most technical problems
yourself. Everything inside your VPS is your responsibility to
configure and manage.
To install a custom module or software, you will need to ask our
technical support team. Only some modules / applications will be allowed.
You are free to install any modules, configurations, or applications that
you need.
You cannot request a change of server-wide configurations as it would
affect other shared customers.
You can change any server-wide configuration to suit your needs.
You are not allowed to run a daemon or a server that runs in the background.
You can set up a custom daemon or server that runs in the background.
We manage the server and the network, including the software that runs
inside the shared server, such as Apache, email server, FTP, ssh, etc.
We manage the server (hardware) and the network. You manage the
operating system and the software within your VPS.
There is no isolation between accounts on a shared server. If one account
gets compromised through an insecure script, there is a potential
that the hacker can also gain access to your scripts, depending
on your file permissions.
There is no way for another compromised VPS to affect your VPS from the
security point of view.
If another site on the shared server is busy, your site's performance
will also suffer from it.
Your VPS is guaranteed a certain amount of RAM and CPU share so even if
another VPS is busy and becomes very slow, your VPS will not be
significantly affected.
